August Cement Shipments Drop Nearly 9%

Total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in August 2024 were estimated 9.93 million metric tons (Mt), and 8.9% decrease from shipments in August 2023, according to the most recent USGS Mineral Industry. Shipments for the year through August totaled an estimated 68.5 Mt, a 5.8% decrease from those in the prior-year period. 

Of total blended tonnage reported year-to-date in 2024, 38.3 Mt (97%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL); the leading destination for Type IL shipments by tonnage was Texas.

The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in August were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama. The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Georgia, in descending order) received 38.3% of August shipments.

Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 193,000 metric tons in August, a 6.7% from those in August 2023. Shipments for the year through August totaled an estimated 1.51 Mt, a decrease of 6.6% from those in the same period in 2023. The leading masonry cement-consuming states in August 2024 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, California, Georgia and North Carolina; these states received 59.6% of August shipments.

Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.52 Mt in August, a 5.1% decrease from production in August 2023. Production for the year through August totaled an estimated 46.8 Mt, a 6.4% decrease from that in the same period in 2023. The leading clinker-producing states in August 2024 were, in descending order, Missouri, Texas, California, Florida and Alabama.
